The use of music while Brenda shares her backstory puts audiences in a nostalgic trance. Sounds of chanting indicate individuals with the same islander history and culture as Brenda like in Outrigger Regatta. Brenda's accents when portraying other characters like Aunti Mary and Kali are strong and she intentionally leaves out hard consonant sounds so they sound more like islanders and less like Californians. Slow, soft rock sounds will play to indicate smooth-sailing summers, while percussion will pick up to indicate exciting scenes and increased heart rate like when Kali first speaks to Brenda. As the play moves forward, romantic jazz music plays when Kali and Brenda reconnect and go out to dinner. Her tone of voice changes when she excitedly tells Hai about her date. She even slurs her words when portraying a drunk Judy. By the end of the play, music and sound effects increase in volume and speed as the story reaches its climax, and after, we are back listening to Brenda's narration to slow nostalgic music just like the beginning when recalling her backstory. Brenda Aoki does a phenomenal job of using distinct voices and appropriate music to make the most of a minimal stage setting.
